happy anniversary!

modflowers: vintage fabricI refuse to call it a blogoversary – such an ugly word! – but it was two years ago yesterday that I started this blog.

So it’s a happy anniversary to me!

When I started I had no expectations. Just a vague feeling of trepidation.

I didn’t have a plan. I didn’t have list of post topics. I didn’t have a timetable, or a logo. In fact, I didn’t have any of the things you’re meant to have when you start a blog.

I just had an idea that I’d make it up as I went along, see how it went, hopefully promote my Etsy shop a bit in the process. Making it up as I go along is how I tend to approach most things really.

This blog is what has resulted….

blue vintage fabricsI thought about writing about what I’ve learned during my two years of blogging. But that seemed a bit pretentious. Two years of muddling along does not an expert make.

If you do want to read about lessons learned from blogging, read Grace Bonney’s fantastic post on Design Sponge here. She says it so much better than I could.

Mainly I’ve learned that, most of the time, I just like blogging.

I like having an egocentric little space to share what I make, write about the things I like, communicate my enthusiasms and have conversations with people who like similar stuff.

I like messing about with the design. I like the structure and discipline of integrating writing regular blog posts into my daily life.

But most of all, I like the connections I have made, and go on making, with other people.

modflowers: lovely vintage fabricsIt can be a solitary existence, working from home, on your own all day with only Radio 4 for company.

Don’t get me wrong, I like my own company, and I chose to do what I’m doing. I am actually quite shy and solitary.

And there aren’t many people in my life that share my enthusiasm for vintage fabric. If I went on about it to them as much as I do on my blog, I’m not sure I’d still have any friends left.fabrics for Rachel1My blog has connected me with others of the same persuasion that I would never have encountered otherwise.

Blog friends who share my enthusiasm and put up with my meanderings, who comment and commiserate, who share stuff and send things and of whose own lives I get a glimpse. And it’s just wonderful

So happy anniversary – and thank you everyone.

I’ll stop now, before I go all Gwyneth Paltrow on you. ♥
