hearts and flowers

modflowers: vintage fabric cat cushion with heart pocketI decided yesterday that I had had enough of mice for the time being.

So I went back to a cat cushion idea that I’d had in mind for a while. Ever since I bought this rather spiffing abstract check fabric, in fact.

modflowers: painterly check vintage fabricThe yellow colours in it almost perfectly match the yellow gingham curtain fabric I found in a charity shop. They were simply made for one another and I wanted to bring them together.

And then I found this stuff, which has, I think, a complimentary 1950s vibe. So I used it on the reverse…

modflowers: handmade vintage fabric cat cushion I also got all inspired by a pinny I saw on sale in a vintage shop recently. I didn’t buy it, so I can’t show you – I am trying not to buy pinnies for fabric as I can never bear to cut them up – but it had a little pocket in the shape of a heart.

Making a heart pocket is not quite as straightforward as making a square one. I had to make it up a bit as I went along. (I should have remembered that there is a wonderful lined patch pocket tutorial here that would have made it a lot easier).

It looked ok when it was done, but not quite as cute as I’d hoped. There was something missing.

And then I remembered – the pinny pocket I’d admired had had the benefit of a bit of trim. There are no words for how completely a bit of trim can transform a pocket, as far as I’m concerned.

So out came the trim bag. And guess what?

There was just enough of this lovely daisy stuff left to do the job. Literally, there was not even a single flower to spare.

modflowers: vintage gingham heart pocketI hate running out of cute vintage supplies. Heaven knows when – or even if – I’ll ever find any more.

But it had to be done.

And so the pussy cat with a big heart is born. It just needs something to pop into that pocket now.

  1. He’s fabulous! I just adore your cats – Marmalade gets a good squeeze every night and makes me smile so much – his jingly bell is so cheery 🙂 And thanks for the link to the pocket tutorial – want to add one to my next tote bag (when I finally get near my sewing machine – I’ve been painting walls white every day for what feels like forever!!).
