a doer-upper

modflowers: embroidered cottageJust a very quick post today to show you this embroidered beauty.

I forgot to mention this as one of my purchases from the antiques fair!

I’m not quite sure what it’s meant to function as – a tea cosy? Well, more of a teapot cover really, since it has no padding and wouldn’t really keep your tea very cosy.

A summer tea cosy perhaps.modflowers: cottage embroideryIt has the most beautiful embroidery.

But it is a little the worse for wear. There are holes and tears and thread pulls.

I am going to try to cosmetically renovate it.

And then… well, I’m not really sure what to do with it after that. It’s a bit twee for my home decor, but it’s just so pretty I couldn’t resist.

What do you think? ♥

  1. THAT is quite a find. I know what you mean about finding homes for interesting quirky things that don’t exactly fit in with more modern tastes. Is there some way you could combine this with mod fabric for a pillow or other item? It’s just so amazing! I have a drawer full of vintagey things that I’m flummoxed by. Will watch to see what you do. Watch and learn, watch and learn.

  2. Love it. We have recently been experimenting with adding quirky things into our totally mid century house and it works if you group them together. An odd bit of 20’s or 30’s stuff hanging around wont work but a tableau on shelf of items clustered looks really inspiring. I found a linen cushion cover very similar to your cottage cosy when I was working in Cardiff. Um-ed and Ah-ed and once I had decided I was going to buy it I went back half an hour later and it had gone! Oh well…

    • I agree, I love a mix of eras and have lots of quirky bits and bobs round the place ranging from Victoriana onwards, but somehow, however I try to style it the lacy stuff always just looks wrong. And I love it to bits, so I really wish I could find a way to make it work!

      • Yes totally agree about lacy stuff. Ive got some wonderful tablecloths bought at car boot sales because I admired the craftsman/womanship so much but they look like Miss Marple has come to stay. The swedish and quebecoise do modern and lacy stuff well – particularly with window blinds and half curtains but Ive never made it work in the UK.

  3. I’ve seen people who can do it – Debi Treloar has used some lacy stuff very nicely in her home and in the places she has styled in her books. But she is mega-talented!
