the fear

modflowers: vintage tea towel patchwork quiltYou may remember that some time ago I made this quilt top.

It’s actually a commission.

And I’m very ashamed to say that although the top is finished, I still haven’t turned it into a quilt.

I got The Fear.

modflowers: quilt squares The Fear sneaks up on you when you’re not paying attention.

It whispers, insidiously, in your ear.

“You can’t do that”, it hisses. “You’ll ruin it if you try”.

The Fear saps your confidence and paralyses you. It makes you doubt your abilities until, full of shame, you stash that work-in-progress away in the cupboard.

You put off dealing with it for just another day. And then another. And another.

Until The Fear turns you to jelly at the very thought.

modflowers: vintage tea towel quilt top I decided I need an ally to help me fight The Fear.

I have booked myself on a course at Coles Sewing Centre. I was supposed to be going today, but it was postponed.

Meanwhile, The Fear is still there in the background, whispering snide things like “it’ll be really complicated” and “that’ll take ages” and “you’ll look really stupid taking that to a class”.

But I am not listening.

The quilt top is out of the cupboard and packed up ready.

The Fear’s days are definitely numbered. ♥

    • Oh, I can, I can… hence The Fear! But having chatted with a tutor at Coles, I’m going to get some step-by-step tips on Thursday on how to make it as good as possible. Which is exactly what I need!

  1. I know that fear… I especially have it with fabric… once it’s cut that’s it! Wool is great you just undo it and try again… and again.. and… For me it is wrapped up in wanting to do my best and wanting my best to be good… It’s great to get the support of someone who knows… then in turn you can support others when their turn comes too… Smiles Cass x

    • Absolutely Cass! I love mastering skills and I do learn a lot on my own, either through trial and error or online tutorials. But as this one is a commission I really need a bit of extra help. I’ll pass on any particularly good tips!

  2. Yep, I know this one too……I have almost finished knitting a cardigan for the second time…….didn’t like the pattern I used the first time so I undid it. This time I love the pattern but the fear tells me it is too small, so I am avoiding sewing it together…..I couldn’t bear to undo it again.
    Good luck……I LOVE the quilt.

  3. I know the Fear all too well…but you can kick it’s ass!! Well done for getting help. I’m starting an intermediate sewing course this week, to help me fight my Fear of zips and other complicated things that I somehow just can’t try on my own. That quilt is going to look amazing when it’s finished! xx

  4. It looks awesome! I have never made a quilt … I started one once many moons ago, but it has been hanging in the back of the cupboard for too many years… I too have the fear to attempt to finish it!
Good luck! can’t wait to see the end result!

    • Get it out Laura! Dust it down and see if you can’t do something with it. If it’s just for you, you don’t even have to quilt it – just back it with an old sheet, finish off the edges and use it as a tablecloth or throw. Much better than gathering dust in the back of the cupboard!

  5. I love this quilt top <3! Imagine one in a caravan, made from tea towels from all your travels – heaven! Good luck on your class, I'm looking forward to hearing all about it xxx
