the good, the bad… and ebay

modflowers: folk tableclothI may have mentioned before my love-hate relationship with ebay.

Sometimes, things are great and we get along like a house on fire.

Which results in lovely things like this folky tablecloth plopping through my letterbox of a morning.

modflowers: folk tablecloth modflowers: folk tablecloth modflowers: folk tableclothIsn’t it pretty?

It has a few minor holes and marks, but I knew that when I bid. They’re nothing that can’t be worked around.

But sometimes, even, as in this instance, on the same day, things are not so happy.

I bought some fabric which beguiled me so completely that I paid well over my normal limit for it. So I was really looking forward to getting my hands on it…

modflowers: stained fabricBut disappointment awaited when I opened the parcel. My lovely buy looked like someone had spilt blackcurrant juice all over it. Big pink splodges everywhere.

Admittedly, they’d then had a good go at washing it out. Along with quite a bit of the colour in the fabric.

But they had neglected to mention this issue when describing – or photographing – the fabric for the benefit of buyers.

I tried, reasonably enough I thought, to request a partial refund, so that I was only paying for the part of the fabric that wasn’t actually stained. But the buyer wasn’t having any of it. And so back in the mail it went, on the same day it arrived.

This sort of thing always leaves a somewhat sour taste. Sellers aren’t obliged to refund the cost of returning stuff, which has to be by a tracked mail service to allow you to qualify for a refund.

So it cost me £2.00 for a quick fondle. If you see this lovely stuff relisted and are tempted by it’s charms, remember – buyer beware!

I know I’ll be tempted again by ebay’s charms.

As soon as my broken heart has mended a bit. ♥

  1. Know that feeling all too well! It’s a shame others aren’t as honest as we are! The hassle of sending and paying for something to be returned when it not your fault has happened twice this week to me-thought it was just my bad luck!! x

  2. Oh no! I saw that, and was tempted by it myself…and I’m planning to bid on another item from the same seller…I guess I’ll keep my fingers crossed that they’ve learnt from that mistake! So disappointing for you, I hope you’ve got over the disappointment! x

    • Did you win anything from this seller Rachel? I only ask because that fabric has reappeared on ebay, with no mention of any problems with it in the item description.
I eventually had to get ebay to refund me for it, as despite the seller having signed for the returned parcel (good job I did use a tracked postal service) they didn’t send me a refund.

  3. Such a shame and a waste of your time..One of the first pieces of vintage fabric I bought from Ebay when it first started back in the day arrived from the US with a big stain in the middle. No mention, I kept it though and have used it as a tea towel ever since, a cowboy one 🙂
