getting better

modflowers: new modflowska! It’s a funny thing, revisiting something you made a while back.

You may remember my post about being inspired to make a matryoshka cushion after seeing some Russian dolls on Lucy Loves Ya’s blog.

modflowers: the original matryoshkaI liked her so much that I made another one.

modflowers: modflowska mark twoBut alas, despite hawking the modflowska sisters at every stall since, they weren’t snapped up by any similarly smitten customers.

However, one person it seems was harbouring a secret love. And just recently they asked me to come up with a custom version of modflowska, just for her.

Despite an extensive search, I couldn’t find the pattern I drew last time, so I made a new one.

I’ve just completed modflowska mark three and she has made me realise just how much better I’ve got at everything since I made the previous versions.

modflowers: new modflowskaI’ve learned lots of little tricks along the way. Like when you’re drawing a pattern, you draw half of it, fold it, and then cut – so that both sides are symmetrical!

My new machine is also a complete boon when it comes to appliqué, so my stitching is neater and not subject to the wobbles caused by Bernette’s tendency to race off at top speed like a dog let off a leash.

modflowers: new modflowskaBut most of all it’s true that practice makes perfect. Sewing nearly every day for over a year gives a certain familiarity, a feeling of confidence.

modflowers: new modflowskaI’m less scared of trying things now, because I know what’s possible.

I’ve learned so much. I’m still learning all the time.

And I know I’m only going to get better still. ♥

    • I’m so glad you like her Erica! I will be going to the post office in a little while and will let you know how much the postage is on your complete parcel. And thank you for the suggestion – I will indeed put the other modflowskas in my Etsy shop when I get chance.

  1. They’re so lovely! I’m loving watching you develop these wonderful ranges of yours, and I can definiteIy see your skills and confidence improving. I will have to treat myself to a Modflowers creation soon! I can’t wait to get into my studio and have a play…it’s frustrating having so much amazing fabric and no time to sew! xx

    • Ah thank you Rachel! I was thinking of making you something as a wedding present, but it will have to wait (possibly until after Christmas) as I am snowed under with commissions and projects at the moment!
I do have something in mind, but if you have any particular desires do let me know x

  2. did you find that your machine was running on even without your foot on the pedal ?
I had that trouble with my Bernetta and it is a common fault with these machines ….had mine repaired by a great chap I found on Ebay…Bob Green in Widnes his phone number is 01514 205565..He is extremely cheap and reliable….
By the way I live in Beeston Nottm.

    • No Sue, that wasn’t the problem. It needed a new foot pedal basically, as the old one had only two speeds: full speed or nothing. I had the machine serviced at Coles in town and they did a good job, but now I have a new Husqvarna Sapphire 875Q from them and Bernette is just a back-up. I love my new machine and it has all sorts of useful features that now I don’t know how I managed without! Thank you for the recommendation though!

  3. I absolutely LOVE your new design and choice of fabrics. Is the one in the second picture destined for your Etsy shop? I just adore those particular fabrics. I have been admiring the amazing stitching on my owl and hoping that one day I might get there… x

    • Both modflowskas are now listed on Etsy, Zoe. And as I said in the post, practice makes perfect – if you really want to be able to sew, you’ll get there sooner than you think if you keep at it.
